Hi! I'm Audra, a student at the University of Texas studying creative writing. I'm currently working on a short story about prison break conspiracy. It's over three thousand words long and there are still so many things I want to add to it, but I can't get past the second chapter without losing my mind. So what should I do? How should I cure this creative block? If you're having similar problems with your work, then you might have been hit with creative block too. It's not just for writers either - creative tasks in arts and crafts can be even tougher for some people when they face struggles with inspiration or even knowing where to start. So here are a few of my best tips for you to use when you're having problems with the creative process. 1.) Start over from square one. Sometimes, there's just too much going on in your brain and you can't get anything out of it. If this is the case, then try getting away from your work for a while and returning to it later. Sometimes a bit of distance from your work will help you see the big picture again and realize what kind of things need fixing before moving forward with whatever project you're working on. Set a time limit for yourself - say, twenty-four hours or a week - and then come back to your work with fresh eyes. 2.) Get a bit of distance from your work. Sometimes, getting a little distance from your work can help you see the big picture again and realize what kind of things need fixing before moving forward. 3.) Turn off your brain. Sometimes just being able to step away from the project will help you see it from a new perspective. If this isn't for you, then try taking a nap or going for a walk - do something that will take your mind off of the project so you can come back with a fresh perspective. The less time you have to spend thinking about it, the better off you will be when it's time to return to work on it again. 4.) Be social. Sometimes, you can find ideas from other people's works by talking to them about it - especially if they're working on a similar project as you. If this isn't for you, then try looking through the works of other artists on your favorite websites and talking about it with friends or family members. 5.) Have a deadline and stick to it. Setting a time limit for yourself is very helpful in pushing past those creative blocks and getting those ideas out of your head so you can move on with your work. If you stick to the time limit, then you won't keep worrying about how much longer it's going to take before you find inspiration again. 6. ) Break the rules. Not only is it okay to break a few creative rules when you're in a pinch, but it can be just what you need to get your creative juices flowing again. If you're not sure how to fix a problem, then try experimenting with different solutions until something clicks. If that solution breaks a few creative rules, then so be it! In fact, that's the best time to break some of those rules because nothing will seem quite so scary if you have an open mind about breaking them. 7.) Make lists of ideas and projects.
